Alternative Lables for the Three Types of Dating

By-Monica Adrian

The best way to get the most out of dating is to know what you've got and enjoy it for what it is. This helps you to not let your feelings get ahead of you so you can avoid getting unnecessarily hurt. Labels are useful because they help you identify what you have and eliminate confusion.
For this reason I've come up with a few alternative labels to keep in mind while you date that I'm sure will make sense to you.

1. Indulgence

An Indulgence is a non-committal form of dating. It's minimal work for maximal pleasure. These run the gamut of vacation romances to friends with benefits to affairs. It's having something for the sake of the moment without any concept of a future involved. I call this an Indulgence because like chocolate, it's unsustainable for anything long-term.

2. Experiment

An Experiment is a transitional period that could go either direction. You are seeing whether a relationship is worth having with the other person. I call this the experimental stage of dating because both people are in the process of testing each other out and seeing if their personalities are a good fit for one another. It's an exciting time where feelings are brewing like chemical reactions and you are seeing whether you have chemistry. However, the results are uncertain.

3. Merry-go-round/Ferris Wheel

Both these stages are in the midst of what we generally define as a relationship, as in something that is exclusive and at least somewhat committed. The only difference is that a Merry-go-round is more stable where as a Ferris Wheel has many highs and lows. What makes these rides fitting to describe a relationship is that their movement is circular. While they may be enjoyable, it's uncertain whether they will take off into marriage or if they will simply continue as they are, going round and round.
