The Best Date Ideas in Simi Valley

By Monica Adrian

Where I'm from, everyone complains that there's nothing to do. Simi Valley, CA is an ultra suburban town and while it is great for fostering families, it's not so great in providing romance for new love. It's difficult coming up with date ideas for this reason. But the idea that there is nothing to do here, is not entirely true. There are some places and activities that could lead to a fun and eventful date, other than going out to dinner, if you are willing to be open-minded. Below I've compiled a list that is definitely worth checking out. I've also included links to either the website or Yelp profile page to provide yourself with the addresses and store hours.

Bowling

Harley's Simi Bowl
The lights and music creates a pseudo club vibe that will give you enough privacy to sneak a kiss in between bowling turns. For the non-competitive couple, this could be a lot of fun and Harley's has a great reputation for being clean and affordable. If you want to really impress your date, you can even send a request and show off your thoughtfulness by having them play their favorite song.

Ice Skating

Iceoplex
This is the perfect romantic date for holding hands or getting out of your comfort zone.

Golfing

Golf is a leisurely outdoor activity, perfect for getting to know each other. And who doesn't look cute in Khakis?
Simi Hills Golf Course
This golf course overall got the best reviews. Plus, there is an affordable, delicious restaurant that you can dine at as well for a complete date experience.
Lost Canyon's Golf Course
This golf course is for the more adventurous couple. It would be best to go in the spring when it's greener.
Sinaloa Golf Course
This is a great place for beginning golfers. It's small and even offers lessons.

Movie in the Park

Parks and Rec
These are usually played on Fridays and Saturdays. Check the site to see when the next one is. Also, be prepared to be surrounded by mostly families with children.

Dance Classes

Parks and Rec

This date doesn't really work unless you are already committed and have set schedules. Classes are usually 4-6 weeks long. Despite the inconvenience, ballroom dance is a great thing to learn with your partner. It builds trust, teamwork, and can feel very romantic, especially when you take your moves elsewhere. You will find a younger crowd in faster dance classes like Salsa and Swing. You will find an older crowd in slower dances like Rumba, Fox Trot and Waltz. But even if you are young, it's nice to be around older couples who have successful relationships and are still making an effort for each other.

Tennis/Pickleball

Rancho Tapo Community Park

Tennis is fun, but it's also exhausting. Pickle Ball is a nice alternative to tennis. The courts are smaller and the pace is slower. Instead of a tennis ball, you use a wiffle ball. To learn how to play just click this link.

Karaoke

TGI Fridays
This is only on Monday nights from about 10 to 12:30. You can sit anywhere at the bar or restaurant and participate. There's no need to feel shy because there are not a lot of serious singers coming. The downside is that some of the singers are a bit painful to listen to,..at least this is how it is currently. Other than that, it's a nice atmosphere with pleasant people.
Judge Roy Bean's
This seems to be Simi's most popular bar. They have Karaoke on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The singers here are usually higher quality, but if you're drunk, no one is going to get mad at you for wanting to make a fool of yourself. The place is very dark so that it's nice for privacy. There is a bit of a rough crowd here and if that is a concern, I'd stick to TGI's.

Coffee and Sweets

Caffe Connections
If you're going to do a coffee date, at least make it more original by going into a small locally owned shop. It's quiet, there's comfy chairs, free wifi, and a selection of beverages and pastries where you ought to find something.
Dr. Conkey's Candy and Coffee Co
I've been coming to this place since I was a kid. Not only do they have gourmet coffee and chocolates, but you can purchase specific flavors of jelly beans by the pound. This is a fun and interactive date. It's not great for sitting down though. It's loud and very cramped. It's not a nice area for outdoor seating either. Perhaps grab your goodies and head to the park.

Bookstore

$5 or less Bookstore
I love checking out books with pictures on dates. You get to find out what each other's interests are, whether it's art, travel, cars, cooking ect. They have a book on everything. The seating area has a sign limiting you to thirty minutes, but I say it's not worth worrying about.

Comic Book Store

Dream World Comics
The staff is super friendly and they have a lounge section where they'll let you browse through their comics.

See a Play

Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center
Even though this is a small theater, it has some big talent and decent production value. This is a great alternative to seeing a movie.

See a Movie

Simi Valley 10 Cinemas
If you are going to see a movie on your date, I suggest going to the discount theater. You can see them at just a fraction of the cost. I prefer the size of the screens as well. The only downside is that there is a divider between the seats.

The Mall

Simi Valley Town Center
This is only a good date idea around Christmastime when the mall is decorated and they have fake snow.

Special Events

Simi Events
Sometimes Simi has music in the park, chili cook-offs, small festivals or fairs. It's not something you are going to be able to find every weekend, but it's good to keep an eye out.

Ronald Reagan Library

Ronald Reagan Presidential Library

I love this date. It's an awesome museum complete with a tour of Air Force One. The view is gorgeous and they have a café to recharge. I especially like this museum around Christmastime when they have a themed Christmas tree exhibit along wtih other temporary exhibits.

Hiking

Mount McCoy

If you're into nature, Simi has some great hiking locations.

Play Pool

Billards Plaza

This is a fun late evening date. You can feel free to be competitive or just mess around. A lot of people take advantage of the jukebox too.

The Park

Rancho Simi Recreation and Park
This is a huge, spacious park with a gorgeous duck pond.
Rancho Tapo Community Park
This park is usually more crowded as it is a bit smaller. However, there's something for everyone including, tennis, basketball, a fitness area and a veterans memorial with a duck pond as well.
