Pros and Cons of Artist Stereotypes

By Monica Adrian

In my experience as an artist, these are stereotypes that seem to follow me everywhere.

Pros

1. You are Put on a Pedestal

Hearing that someone is an artist tends to excite people. One reason this may be is that they like the idea of being around someone who is talented and could be potentially famous. Also, they may believe that this talent makes a person inherently special because not everyone is able to be "born with it". Some people have such high admiration for art that being an artist in their eyes is equivalent to being a superhero, as if being able to do art is some kind of superpower.

2. You are seen as Sexier or More Sexual

People believe that artists are full of passion and this makes for an exciting sexual partner. Because artists are seen to be more emotionally connected, this gets conflated with being more sexually invested as well. Not only that, but a woman with paint all over her body has a certain visual appeal and the physical motions of a woman painting or drawing has a subtle erotic effect. There is something inexplicably sexy about watching someone paint, draw or sculpt.

3.You are Able to See the World Differently than Others

Artists are regarded as thought provokers or people with large imaginations. They are viewed as being able to think outside the box. Since their view of the world is construed as being more expansive than others, people think of them as having vision.

4. You Have Superior Self-Expression

People have the idea that artists are more in touch with their inner-selves, which allows them to express themselves better than the average person. Since art is generally thought of as a form of expression, this translates into the idea that artists not only have a higher need to express themselves but are able to do so at a greater capacity.

5.You Have an Excuse for Messiness

Everyone knows that artists are messy, so if you are a messy artist, it will be considered far more acceptable than if you were not one. In fact, some people even find it charming or endearing. Aside from constantly having canvases and paints out, mess is apparently thought of as the mark of a creative person.

6. You are More Creative at Everything

I don't know anyone who would reject the idea that artists are creative. Because someone can sculpt or paint, generally they are thought to be good people to turn to for other unrelated creative decisions. This causes them to be often consulted for their opinion on draperies, table settings, website layouts, product design, color schemes, birthday party themes, ect...

7. You are More Complex

Artists are not regarded as simple people. Instead they are thought of as highly evolved or developed in thought and emotion. Being an artist is generally not seen as just a trade but as a lifestyle, attitude or persona. Because of the artistic energy that they bring with them to their daily lives, artists are at a different level than the rest of us. Their emotions are able to change rapidly, they have more complex needs, and are not as easily understood. This makes them intriguing and mysterious.

Cons

1. You are Too Emotional/Sensitive

Because artists are seen as so in-tune with their emotions, often this comes across negatively and are seen as being too emotional.  Often being creative is attributed to high amounts of pain that needs to be cathartically released. This creates the assertion that artists are neurotic with uncontrollable mood-swings and volatile emotions.

2.You Obsess or are Incredible Introverted

It's a cliché that artists are obsessive. Often when people think of what a serious artist is, what comes to mind is someone who is slaving away for days or weeks at their work. This is definitely not an attractive quality when determining to have a relationship with one. We all know what happened with Van Gough.
People may assume that they’re the type that doesn’t like to deal with people and would rather busy themselves in their work. This causes people to view them as unsociable, grumpy, and may cause them to avoid their company.

3.You Have Too Big of an Ego

Because there is such a big hype about being an artist, people often think that this gets to their heads. Artists are notoriously known for being wildly egocentric. The pride that comes from creating original work and things unseen by this earth can at times make them feel like they're playing god.

4.You do Drugs

People often think, especially if you create abstract or use bright colors, that in order to create your work you had to be some sort of high to do so. As artists are thought of as being able to see the world differently than others, this is often confused with them using drugs of some kind.

5.Assumed to be Messy even if You're Not

Artists are thought of as being justified messy people. However, this is annoying if you actually are clean.

6. You are Freaky in Bed

As artists are thought to be supremely sexual, generally this gets affiliated with being kinky as well or a freak in the bedroom. This is a problematic expectation if you are in fact not at all kinky and just enjoy good old-fashioned sex.

7.You Are Poor or Starving

Lastly, if you're an artist, people will generally assume you are dead broke. For this reason, hearing that you are an artist may turn a person off.
